This weekend I had the time to read the book cover to cover on the plane and in the airport. As a kayaker, not a fisherman, I found the book to be super informative, and very neutral. I think I have learned more about what is needed and what to look for in a fishing kayak than I have in many years pursuing the kayak fishing market. The detail of the writing, the pictures, and your story kept me interested form the start to the finish. Awesome job. I bet it will do a lot to attract newcomers to the sport who want to learn more about what they need, and how to do it. Thanks for adding to the sport in such a positive way, Jon. You set a new standard in my mind. You are a true leader for kayak fishing, all others are followers. Andy Zimmerman, CEO of Legacy Paddlesports
I received Jon's book and I cannot put it down. It is a "must have" for the newbie and experienced yaker. Jon you nailed it. Super Job! Toolman
Overall the book is an outstanding overlook of a growing sport, written intuitively and with a non-biased, non-corporate feel to it. The depth of material and knowledge is a basis or benchmark for all others to be held to and it owes that to the author and his love for the sport. A refreshing take on fishing and kayaking and how they have been blended together. Great Job Jon. Capt. Daniel Hubbard, Anthracite Outfitters Guide Service
There have been some marvelous books written about kayak fishing and it’s inevitable that one or two will be referred to as “The Bible” of kayak fishing. I’m not going to compare Jon Shein’s endeavor to the ancient texts. Jon was not around for the birth of kayak fishing. He discovered yak fishing as most of us did and he offers a fresh look at this wacky sport. Therefore I will suggest that if there is a Bible for kayak fishing Jon has added The New Testament. In my opinion Jon has succeeded in including almost everything you’d want to know about kayak fishing into one, easy to read and well structured document. Even an experienced angler will benefit from this informative offering. Even I, I Fishhead, learned a couple of things. Hard to believe, I know. As soon as you pick up this book you can feel Jon’s love of kayak fishing. You are guided through all aspects of kayak fishing. Jon relates his own experiences in each section and it gives the reader a personal point of reference that makes this book not only a great manual but also a great read. Kayak Fishing by Jon Shein is a must have for any newcomer or old salt. This book will help you catch more fish. Steve, Tightlines Kayaking
Fantastic Job, I got my copy of your book yesterday, and you really outdid yourself. The quality of the writing, the layout and the photos is a cut above. It is an honor to have Hobie represented in this fine work. Thanks so much, Jon, and I know the book is going to be a huge success. Best regards, Ruth Triglia -Vice President Sales, Hobiecat
I received my copy just in time for my long awaited trip to Florida. So I couldn't wait to board the plane and start reading. As with all books, I first just quickly glanced through the pages to see if anything catches my eye and to look at the pictures. Well this book has plenty of both. I started reading Jon's intro and chapter 1 (My Story) and I couldn't put the book down. For the next 2 weeks after fishing and with any available spare time I would pick up Kayak Fishing and start reading, sometimes going back and re-reading the chapters. I found the book extremely informative and educational. I have read just about every kayak fishing related book on the market and have seen several videos. This is the only book I have gone back to for reference time and time again. Whether you are a beginner or advanced kayak fisherman, this book offers something new for everyone. A highly recommended read with no hidden agenda by the author. Dino, Native Watercraft Endorsed Guide, The Pond Hopper
I just started reading the book and I have already picked up some pointers. It's interesting to see how others have come to the same conclusion when it comes to gear and storage. If you are starting out kayak fishing, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy on top of reading info on the internet. 99% of the info in the book can be found on the internet, just not as neat and organized as the book. The book Jon wrote is not regional; the book covers us here in New England as well as fishing in Florida and the west-coast. There are pictures of Salmon fishing in Alaska. Freshwater tips are in there also.
You can't borrow mine (You can read it on my porch) Nils, editor Ultimate Kayak Fishing
My copy just arrived today-- WOW~ it’s a huge book, just loaded with so much information. I also like the fact it has information about multiple regions and covers so many topics. It's definitely worth the money and trouble to order it. GFG
When I started kayak fishing in 2006, I got the bug and wanted to know as much as I could about the sport. I wanted to know what I needed to get started… what kind of kayak I should purchase…how I should outfit my kayak for fishing… safety gear… and the list goes on. There were probably less than 30 people on the Big Island that were kayak fishing at that time that I knew of. Most information on kayak fishing was scarce unless you belonged to a forum. The first kayak I purchased for $1,000 was a disaster! I wasted so much money on unnecessary gear and tackle. Where was this book? Well, I just completed Jon Shein’s new book titled “Kayak Fishing” from cover to cover (210 pages). I have never met Jon, never really knew anything about him until Maui Mark shared with me that this was a must read book on the sport we love. So I ordered it online at www.kayakfishingbook.net for $29.99 plus shipping. I’m really not the type of person at this stage of my kayak fishing to read a general book on kayak fishing unless it has something to do with Hawaii kayak fishing. But I found it to be unbiased and well worth the read. This book alone will save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars before you invest your hard earned money on kayak fishing. In general the book covers the topic of kayak fishing thoroughly but it lacks talking about kayak fishing in Hawaii. Its focus is on east coast, southwest and western shore on the mainland covering saltwater to fresh water kayak fishing. But here is the greatest thing about this book… Jon Shein has covered everything you can possibly think of when it comes to kayak fishing. He covers his personal story and involvement with kayak fishing being one of the first to create an online kayak fishing store called KayakFishingStuff. This store outfitted hundreds of kayaks for anglers distributing dozens of named brands like Hobie and Ocean Kayaks. He specialized in rigging kayaks for fishing and has put countless hours on the water! So he knows what he’s talking about! So if you want unbiased information on: Choosing a fishing kayak, Accessories and gear, Outfitting a kayak, Tackle and techniques, Kayak fishing environments, Getting to the water, Kayak fishing specifics, Kayak care, Exotic kayak fishing, Kayak fishing tournaments, The future of kayak fishing, Plus more… I would recommend reading Jon Shein’s book. Paul Belmudes editor - Yak Hawaii
The kayak fishing community might just be the fastest growing segment of the sport fishing world, and few are more plugged into this community than Jon Shein. Kayak Fishing is undoubtedly the most thorough treatment of this topic ever created, and is a must-read for anyone with so much as a passing interest in the sport. Shein pulls from years of involvement in the kayak fishing industry, and a perspective that can only be achieved after countless hours on the water. This book’s ample technical detail is interspersed with plenty of first-hand storytelling, and Shein’s colloquial writing style makes it a refreshing read. Soon, our bays, rivers, ponds and oceans will be full of “kayak anglers”, and this book will have had much to do with that. Bill Donnovan, Publisher New Jersey Angler Magazine
Seems like everyone is doing it – fishing from a kayak! Back bays, lakes and ponds, coastal rivers and marshes, and even the surf; what was once a “trick” way to fish has now become the norm, thanks in large part to pioneers like Jon Shein, author of Kayak Fishing. He’s fished from over 55 different models of kayaks and caught over 70 species of fresh and saltwater gamefish from kayaks in his home waters, and at cool places like Alaska, Baja, Florida, New England and the Caribbean. He created the first retail shop devoted entirely to kayaks and helped thousands of ’yakers get outfitted with the best kayak for their type of fishing. His kayak fishing knowledge is broad, and based upon actual on-the-water experiences. If you want to know about kayaks, talk to Jon.
And you can “talk” with him through the pages of Kayak Fishing. It begins by telling Jon’s story; how he got started, how he established his business, where he’s been and what he’s learned over many years of hands-on experience as an avid kayak fishing enthusiast, businessman and guide. It sets the stage for the following chapters that help you choose a kayak, the accessories and the must-have gear and equipment you will need, and how to set up and outfit your personal fishing kayak. The details he provides about installing accessories, electronics, anchoring setups, tackle storage and rod holders will save you time, expense and heartache. He solves problems like dry storage for cameras and cell phones, how to dress and stay dry, and how to be comfortable and safe, day or night.
Anglers will appreciate Shein’s tackle and techniques chapter that cuts through the rumors and describes exactly what fly, spin and casting tackle is needed to effectively fish from a kayak in all types of waters; deep lakes, coastal saltwater, shallow flats and small ponds. The strategies and benefits of trolling, drifting, staking out and anchoring are covered, along with tips on how to approach structure, quiet “hidey” holes, marshes and creeks.
Kayak Fishing is a practical book with plenty of useful advice for veterans and newcomers. The author shows how to transport kayaks, how to get them to the water’s edge and how to care for them and make repairs. Along the way Shein provides tips on paddling, navigating, fishing, and most of all, how to enjoy the total kayak fishing experience.
In a limited space it’s tough to do justice to such a comprehensive book. Kayak Fishing is the best book on the subject and should be essential reading for anyone who owns or plans to buy a kayak for fishing. With over 200 pages of advice, over 200 color photos and a large, easy-to-read format, the book is a bargain at $29.99. The Educated Angler, Pete Barrett
When Jon showed me this book, I was instantly impressed. Kayak fishing is still in its infancy and the book is still being written, pardon the pun. But Jon has taken a giant step forward and we all owe him a large thank you. The thing that immediately strikes the reader is the complete comprehensive treatment of this sport. Shein has cut no corners. He has also not fallen into the trap of talking about one area, one species, or one kayak manufacturer. That aspect alone makes this book well worth the read. As a guide, kayak writer, and lifelong angler I instantly found ideas and concepts that had honestly never crossed my mind. To be truthful reading this book was somewhat of a humbling experience. This book does not look to forward an agenda other than promoting kayak fishing and helping new anglers and grizzled veterans alike. If you are a new kayak angler the concepts tempered through experience and experiment are too valuable to pass up. This book will save you hundreds of man hours, and thousands of dollars in equipment. It’s not with a little jealousy as a writer that I take my hat off to Mr. Shein. Kudos sir!"
